Hi Debs,

Sorry to hear about your Greyhounds health problem BUT I am happy to hear you opened up your home to a retired racing Greyhound. We have 3 retired racers and 1 Galgo hound (Spanish Greyhound) who was rescued from craigslist.

Geri

From: deborahedwards@slingshot.co.nz
Hi

I have the basic insurance for both my large dogs cause unlike Geri
I am quite pathetic with my money.

I adopted Hoss an ex-racing Greyhound December 2007/08 and in June
2008 – 6 months later he was diagnosed with Oral Melanoma – NASTY! I
paid all up just over NZD$3000 for the surgery and holistic treatment
and I would have received approximately NZD$2000 back. Not bad
considering I only have the basic insurance. I think I only started
the insurance two months prior to his diagnosis and am very happy I
have him insured although both of my dogs are the higher cost – more
expensive to treat.

Re: [DogWhispererFans] need help!!! Damaged service dog by cop attack

Content-Type: text/html; charset=US-ASCII

Hi Dave,

I’m sorry, I don’t know anyone who I can suggest would be a good home for
your dog… however, it does sound to me like your dog may have developed
the dog equivalent of PTSD, which my dog also developed after a frightening
situation involving her being attacked by a neighbor’s dog.

In her case, in addition to reworking through training, we needed to put her
on Prozac, and while she is not 100% yet, she is doing MUCH better than
before. Just a thought, that until you can find your dog a new home, you
may want to talk to your vet to find out if putting your dog on Prozac may
help.

Just goes to show that no vaccine is 100%

I came across something some of you may be interested in, especially those who own wolf hybrids.

Here are the references:

The J A M Vet Med Association in 2005 (12) 1729-1739 and Dec 15.1995 Case papers with 16 refs.

The information that follows is a short version and is not word for word.

March 1993 an 11 month neutered male wold hybrid in the Northern CA. region, who was vaccinated observed carrying a dead skunk prior to showing symptoms. The hybrid presented symptoms over a five day period. Conclusion after examination, death and autopsy determined the hybrid was in fact infected with rabies. The vaccine the hybrid received was USDA approved at the time.

There is currently (as of the print of the above article) no USDA approved vaccine for hybrids (or wild animals). This makes the vaccine currently used through out the USA invalid if your hybrid bites someone. Rabies Control Agencies will advice euthanasia and submission of the hybrids head for rabies testing.

You may opt out of putting your hybrid down but must request quarantine at pay for it yourself. However, most agencies will request destruction and submission of the animal’s head. Quarantine reduces the number of people needing to be vaccinate due to contact with the animal. So the option is mostly for public safety. All is good if your dog shows no symptoms after the bite.

Hopefully, you find this as informative as I did.

Most trainers and/or canine professionals will get a pre-exposure vaccine as a precaution, which is a series of three shots. The cost is not covered by insurance. The cost of post-rabies vaccines, which is a series of six shots are not covered by most insurances. The cost of these six shots and can be around $1,600.

Maybe some vets on the group would like to contribute opinions or other articles.

There is no sign of any tech support after two days. Generally they would have sent a notice to moderators and list owners that they are working on it (which has not happened).

I will keep checking in.

[DogWhispererFans] Met the Dog Guy

Well, today I met the professional dog trainer. He first said that my dog is not aggressive. He is a puppy how just doesn’t know what I want him to do. He started out with a different leather lead and collar.(Didn’t have to pay for it). Second, he took the dog and showed how things work with his sessions..one on one. He mentioned that with a dog like Tyoga, a puppy class is just that a play class. He feels there are so many other dogs, that the trainer can not stop and correct every dog much less see all the mistakes in a half hour. We I decided to hire him. I go with the dog and he takes the dog for an hour and train the dog and I come back and he then trains me. I must then go home and do the same training 3 to 4 times a day not more than 15 mins. Today, we did sit, no, heal and sit stay. All went good. I made alot of mistakes but he helped me correct. I was doing a popping correction which he said is not right. His tecnique was smooth and no stress to the dog at all. He noticed little things like when I did the heal and start to walk, I wasn’t using my left leg first. The dog watches that foot to move. Well, all is great with a trainer, lets see how I do. It was amazing all the pic of police dogs and literally 100’s of dogs he was worked with in 25 years. He did say as all do "Next time buy from a good breader which costs more but in the long run, you won’t have to come to a personal trainer. Lesson be learned. He said the dog is a nice boy and is far from any aggresstion.

[DogWhispererFans] Re: Bianca’s weird behavior towards Kayn 2nd request for help

Thank you. She needs to be calmer. She’s so nervous. The broom falls down and she jumps. A chair is pushed around and she jumps. If I happen to get off the couch quickly she jumps up and thinks someone is at the door etc. I sure hope Kayn can help calm her.

Kat,
It’s quite possible that Kayn will create the calmness for you. My new foster Bella is extremely fearful and reacts to every sound or movement. I’ve used my dogs to help create trust with her by allowing her to watch my interactions with them. She is gradually improving. Bianca may do the same. It’s amazing how calm, balanced dogs can fix the unbalanced ones in short order.
